Storm Plus repair and refurbishment facility launched by Storm Environmental

Steel-bodied, four-wheeled bins have a long service life, with many having a proven operating life of over 25 years. However, with more than 1.5 million now in use throughout the UK, inevitably some will need to be repaired or refurbished after many years of hard life.

Following a recent move to a new production facility, Storm Environmental has decided to open a stand-alone 50,000ft2 repair and refurbishment plant for manufacturing steel-bodied waste and recycling bins. The new facility will provide a range of aftersales services for Storm customers, including the refurbishment of Storm and non-Storm manufactured containers.

Axine Taylor is the General Manager of the new site, with Mike Salter the Production Team Manager. To differentiate the two operations, the name Storm Plus has been adopted for the repair shop, with the distinctive white cross logo featuring in the symbol, which is often seen to advertise medical aid in the UK and Europe.

Announcing the new brand, Axine Taylor said: “Storm Plus effectively provides a repair shop for containers to be refurbished to a standard hard to differentiate from new. Customers have told us that their key issues are quality, and that containers to be refurbished are picked up and delivered back to the promised delivery time. With the new production facility and a large administration and customer service team, these are areas where we are sure Storm can give an improved customer experience over that currently available.”

Purpose-built facility

Mike Salter has formed a new production team augmented by team members with many years of experience gained from the Storm new production plant. All bins will be checked on arrival and if any straightening is required, it will be carried out onsite. Bins will then be processed through the computer-controlled conveyor washing, drying, painting, and finishing line. This is the first of its type in Europe, and takes the finishing of bins to an improved level of quality and efficiency.

Salter said: “All containers processed through the facility, whether Storm products or not, get the Storm Plus treatment. After going through the arrivals checking and rectification process, which ensures containers can meet the requirements of European Standard EN 840, containers on the line are blast washed inside and out, then dried in a continuous oven, before refinishing in any RAL colour coating. New castors, lids and logos are also fitted before the finished containers are delivered to the despatch area.”

The plant is designed to be highly environmentally efficient, with bin washing water being filtered and reused, while the paint plant has water curtain recovery and underfloor collection, so no emissions are released into the atmosphere.

Salter added: “We listened to potential customers who told us they are worried about the disruption and emissions that the onsite service offered by other companies caused. The new Storm Plus production line is built round robust systems which eliminate any emissions being released into the atmosphere and ensure all water used will be filtered and recycled back for reuse in the plant.”
